The Gwirize Cultural Village dancers in Salima Dis The Gwirize Cultural Village dancers in Salima District of Malawi are such a vibe! They are a community-led cultural centre that preserves and showcases the traditional dances, music and stories of the Ngoni and neighbouring ethnic groups. These performances are more than entertainment – they are a living archive of history, belief systems and ways of life passed down through generations.

In the project “Zukunft säen: Vegetable Gardens for Smallholder Farmers in Zambia, Solidaridad Germany worked with cotton farmers to create a community garden. What sounds simple provides farmers with an additional source of food and income. This reduces their dependence on the unpredictable cotton markets, diversifies their income, strengthens their economic independence, and reduces their dependence on external aid in the long term.

For many families here, fetching water is a daily ritual shaped by necessity and endurance… a reality that echoes through many rural communities in Zambia where access to clean water remains a challenge.

Access to clean water is not merely a need, but a right that defines our shared humanity.

Here’s a shot of Buseko Market I took this morni Here’s a shot of Buseko Market I took this morning. Located along Lumumba and Umuzililazi roads in Lusaka (near Matero and Emmasdale), the market is a hub for wood processing SMEs. Buseko plays a key role in Lusaka’s informal and small-scale economy, and is a reliable source for construction, carpentry and building materials.

From above, it stretches like a living mosaic — rows of tin roofs, sawdust trails and timber yards.

Have you been to Buseko? What are your stories or experiences?

In 1995, I picked up a pencil and paper and began In 1995, I picked up a pencil and paper and began sketching images from magazines and still life—just for fun. But what started as a playful curiosity quickly unlocked a deep sense of purpose and a vision for a future in the arts. A few drawings later, I began signing every piece with a name that would stick for life: JJArts.

The passion took over completely. So much so that I sometimes had to draw in secret—my parents, understandably, wanted me to focus on school. None of the schools I attended offered art as a subject, so everything I learned, I learned on my own.

In my Matero neighbourhood, there was a Zimbabwean rasta man named Andrew—an artist who painted and did sign writing for local businesses. He took me on, shared his knowledge and gave me sketches of African art to practise with. That was the turning point: from pencil drawings to painting.

While in 11th grade at Mumbwa High School, I teamed up with fellow creatives and petitioned the school to start an art club. The school approved, and Mr Kafuti, a teacher with a passion for art, became our patron. I served as club president. Despite never having attended formal art classes, I sat for art in my final exams—and did far better than I ever would have in History, which I’d dropped for art!

After high school, I kept creating—selling my work to individuals, hotels and the Lusaka Museum.

In 2008, I formally stepped into professional photography and carried my name forward as JJArts Photography. I shot 155 weddings, countless corporate gigs and individual portraits before transitioning into the world of humanitarian photography and filmmaking.

But the photography journey actually began even earlier—in 1997—when I inherited a Wizen film camera from my elder brother, Sydney. He was shifting focus to business, and unknowingly passed the torch that would later help define my career.

30 years later, the passion still burns. From secret sketches to public exhibitions, from painting in Matero to filming around the world—it’s been an incredible journey.
A beautiful afternoon well spent with some of Zamb A beautiful afternoon well spent with some of Zambia’s most passionate photographers.

We gathered not just to talk gear and gigs, but to build something deeper — community. Grateful for the honesty, the laughter and the shared vision.

Big thanks to everyone who came through and to Michael of Mikaela Gardens for hosting us so warmly.

Here’s to collaboration over competition, and growth that’s rooted in unity.
